In 1990, Landscape–Roidis Studio was commissioned by Neroupoli S.A. to undertake the comprehensive landscape design of Waterland, one of Greece’s largest recreational water parks, located in Tagarades, approximately 15 kilometres southeast of Thessaloniki. Spanning an area of 150 acres, the project required the creation of an integrated landscape framework capable of accommodating a diverse range of recreational, sports, and water-based activities while establishing a distinctive identity within the broader rural landscape of Central Macedonia.
The landscape masterplan focused on the organisation and integration of the park’s extensive programme, including swimming pools, water slides, leisure facilities, sports areas, circulation networks, gathering spaces, and supporting infrastructure. A carefully structured system of pathways, plazas, and open spaces was developed to ensure intuitive movement throughout the site while creating a sequence of varied spatial experiences. Water features were treated as the defining element of the project, shaping both the visual character and the visitor experience through a dynamic composition of pools, channels, slides, and recreational zones.
A key objective of the design was the transformation of an open agricultural landscape into a mature recreational environment capable of providing comfort, shade, and environmental quality throughout the year. To achieve this, the project incorporated an extensive planting strategy of exceptional scale. More than **9,500 trees** and **95,000 shrubs, annuals, and perennial herbaceous plants** were introduced across the site, creating a rich and diverse landscape structure that continues to define the character of the park today.
The planting design established a network of shaded promenades, green buffers, and landscaped gathering areas, softening the large-scale recreational infrastructure while enhancing biodiversity and microclimatic performance. The result is a landscape where water, vegetation, and public space operate as a unified system, transforming Waterland into a landmark destination that combines recreation, environmental quality, and immersive outdoor experiences within a carefully designed landscape setting.
