Landscape–Roidis Studio was commissioned by Thessaliki S.A. to develop the comprehensive landscape architecture and environmental mitigation strategy for the Varis–Koropiou Highway, including the design of the tunnel entrance facades along Varis–Koropiou Avenue. The project sought to minimise the visual impact of major transportation infrastructure while establishing a more harmonious relationship between the engineered corridor and the surrounding landscape.

A central objective of the design was the careful integration of the tunnel portals into the existing terrain. Rather than presenting abrupt vertical structures to approaching motorists, the intervention employs a system of sculpted earthworks, graded slopes, and subtle topographical modifications that create a gradual transition between street level and the tunnel entrances. This approach reduces the perceived scale of the infrastructure and allows the built elements to emerge naturally from the landscape.

The planting strategy was developed as an integral component of the environmental mitigation framework. Carefully composed layers of trees, shrubs, and groundcover species follow the geometry of the terrain, reinforcing the continuity of the landform while softening the visual presence of the engineering works. Vegetation functions not only as a screening device but also as a means of reconnecting the altered landscape with its broader ecological context.

Particular emphasis was placed on restoring the character of the pre-existing landscape and ensuring that interventions remain compatible with the natural environment. Through the combined use of landform manipulation, strategic planting, and architectural integration, the project creates a progressive transition between the constructed highway corridor and the surrounding terrain.

The result is an infrastructure landscape that balances technical performance with environmental sensitivity. By transforming utilitarian engineering elements into components of a cohesive landscape composition, the project demonstrates how landscape architecture can contribute to the visual quality, ecological integration, and long-term sustainability of large-scale transportation infrastructure.
