THESSALONIKI CONCERT HALL

THESSALONIKI CONCERT HALL

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Landscape–Roidis Studio was commissioned by Aktor S.A. to participate in the design–build competition for the Thessaloniki Concert Hall, undertaking the landscape design of the surrounding public realm. Conceived as an integral component of the overall proposal, the landscape strategy sought to establish a seamless relationship between the cultural institution, the waterfront, and the wider urban environment.
The design aimed to create a cohesive and welcoming public landscape that would enhance the architectural presence of the Concert Hall while offering a series of outdoor spaces for gathering, movement, and cultural engagement. Particular emphasis was placed on spatial continuity, pedestrian experience, and the integration of the building within its coastal setting, transforming the surrounding grounds into an extension of the civic and cultural life of the city.
Through a carefully considered composition of open spaces, circulation networks, planting, and public amenities, the proposal reinforced the role of the Concert Hall as a landmark destination while contributing to the broader public realm of Thessaloniki’s waterfront. The landscape was envisioned not merely as a setting for the building, but as a dynamic urban environment capable of supporting everyday use as well as large-scale cultural events.
The proposal was awarded first prize in the competition, recognizing the strength of the integrated architectural and landscape vision. Although the scheme ultimately remained unbuilt and an alternative proposal was selected for implementation on the basis of cost considerations, the project stands as a significant exploration of the relationship between architecture, landscape, and public space within one of Thessaloniki’s most prominent cultural developments.
The competition entry demonstrates the potential of landscape architecture to shape civic identity, creating meaningful connections between cultural infrastructure, urban life, and the waterfront context.
