The redevelopment of the pedestrian network along P. Tsaldari Road in Xylokastro, Peloponnese, was conceived as a strategic urban intervention aimed at enhancing the quality of public space while strengthening the town’s commercial and social life. As the principal commercial corridor of Xylokastro, the avenue plays a vital role in connecting residents, visitors, and local businesses.
Landscape–Roidis Studio was commissioned to redesign the pedestrian infrastructure and adjacent public spaces, creating a more accessible, attractive, and environmentally responsive urban environment. The proposal sought to improve pedestrian circulation, organize roadside parking, introduce additional greenery, and establish a clearer relationship between pedestrian movement, vehicular traffic, and public transport.
The design is structured around a continuous paving language that visually unifies the entire avenue, creating a coherent public realm and ensuring smooth transitions between different urban functions. New pedestrian pathways were designed to improve accessibility and comfort, while organized parking areas help reduce visual clutter and enhance traffic management along the corridor.
Planting and landscape elements were carefully integrated throughout the project to introduce shade, soften the urban environment, and reinforce the character of the town center. A contemporary lighting scheme further enhances safety, legibility, and the nighttime identity of the avenue, extending its usability beyond daytime hours.
The result is a pedestrian-oriented streetscape that balances functionality, environmental performance, and urban identity. By prioritizing walkability, improving public amenities, and supporting commercial activity, the project transforms P. Tsaldari Road into a cohesive and vibrant urban corridor that contributes to the long-term vitality of Xylokastro’s town center.
