Landscape–Roidis Studio was awarded first prize in the Panhellenic architectural competition organized by the Onassis Cardiac Surgery Center for the redesign of its surrounding landscape and accessible roof garden. The project encompassed the transformation of the building’s ground-level roofscape into a contemporary green environment, incorporating the commemorative tomb of Alexander Onassis within a unified landscape composition.

A central objective of the design was to strengthen the identity and presence of the hospital’s main entrance. Two mature palm trees were positioned symmetrically on either side of the principal staircase, establishing a visual connection with the existing palm-lined character of Syngrou Avenue and creating a memorable arrival sequence.

The landscape concept is defined by flowing planting forms that introduce softness, movement, and seasonal variation, creating a deliberate contrast with the building’s orthogonal architecture and the linear geometry of the perimeter planters. Carefully selected Mediterranean planting contributes to a calm and restorative environment, reinforcing the therapeutic character of the institution.

At the rear of the site, vertical rows of cypress trees provide structure, rhythm, and spatial definition. Their strong architectural presence complements the clean lines of the building while creating a distinctive backdrop for the roof garden and surrounding open spaces.

The proposal transforms the hospital’s exterior areas into a cohesive landscape that combines functionality, symbolism, and environmental quality, enhancing both the visitor experience and the architectural identity of one of Greece’s most important healthcare facilities.
