In 1985, Landscape–Roidis Studio was commissioned by the Municipality of Nea Ionia, Volos, under the administration of Mayor Andreas Valachis, to design a new metropolitan park on a 170,000 m² site at the edge of the city. The area, formerly used as a military heliport, was characterized by its completely flat topography and the presence of an existing open-air amphitheatre.

The design transformed the site into a dynamic recreational landscape through extensive landform manipulation. A series of artificial hills, waterfalls, and a meandering watercourse were introduced, creating a diverse topographical environment that culminated in a large ornamental lake. Water became the central organizing element of the park, enriching both its ecological and experiential qualities.

A restaurant pavilion was strategically positioned atop one of the landscaped hills, offering panoramic views across the lake and surrounding parkland. The master plan also incorporated a wide range of public amenities, including a botanical garden, a small zoo featuring local fauna, multiple playgrounds, expansive lawn areas, and a traffic education park designed for children.

Particular attention was given to the integration of the existing open-air theatre. Through carefully designed earthworks, ramps, and new circulation routes, the amphitheatre became an integral component of the overall landscape composition, improving accessibility and strengthening spatial continuity throughout the park.

An extensive planting strategy featuring trees, shrubs, and ornamental vegetation was developed to provide shade, seasonal interest, and environmental value. The result was a landmark public landscape that combined recreation, education, culture, and ecology, establishing one of the most significant green spaces in the wider Volos region.
