In 1999, Landscape–Roidis Studio was commissioned to design the complete landscape for a 6,000 m² private estate in Plagiari, on the outskirts of Thessaloniki, Greece. Set on a sloping site, the project sought to establish a seamless relationship between the residence and its surrounding landscape, transforming the property into a cohesive outdoor living environment designed for year-round use.

The master plan carefully responds to the site’s topography, organizing a series of functional and recreational spaces within a richly planted Mediterranean garden. A tennis court was positioned at the lowest elevation of the property, integrating sport and leisure activities into the overall landscape composition while taking advantage of the natural terrain.

Material selection played a key role in reinforcing the project’s connection to place. Local flagstone paving was used throughout pedestrian routes and outdoor gathering areas, creating continuity between architecture and landscape. Timber pergolas were strategically introduced to provide shaded outdoor rooms and comfortable spaces for relaxation and social interaction during the warmer months.

The planting design emphasized native and climate-adapted species, selected for their resilience, low maintenance requirements, and ability to thrive within the environmental conditions of northern Greece. Trees, shrubs, and groundcovers were composed to provide seasonal variation, privacy, and a strong sense of landscape identity while enhancing the property’s ecological performance.

A comprehensive landscape lighting scheme completed the design, carefully illuminating pathways, architectural elements, and key planting features. The result is a balanced and timeless residential landscape where topography, vegetation, and outdoor living are brought together in a harmonious composition that enhances both the character of the residence and the experience of its surroundings.
