Korai, is the downtown central Square of the historic city of Piraeus, located in front of the City Hall. The square together with its neighboring pedestrian streets Dragatsi and Karaiskou are meeting place, for residents and visitors of the city. In this 10,000m2 area, there is an absence of free public walking space, of organized dining areas, infrastructure and modern lighting, lack of cooling elements (water features and greenery), lack of urban furniture, having as result the creation of an unpleasant environment. The landscape architecture study assigned to our office “Landscape-Roidis” by the Municipal organization “Pireas Plus SA” concerns the overall redesign of the square and its neighboring pedestrian ways, contributes to the architectural and bioclimatic upgrade of the area, increases of greenery, utilizes public spaces better, for the benefit of the environment and the public realm.

Landscape Roidis’s new landscape architectural proposal serves the general public with an interactive water fountain act as cooling element, uniformly organized dining areas, new pavement with cold10X10 marble pavers, enrichment of existing vegetation with placement of large trees and extensive shrub planting, increase of urban furniture and sitting areas. All of these design actions will improve the aesthetic appearance of the area leading at the same time to a better microclimate of the area, comfort stay of residents and visitors, generally speaking a square with an upgraded and sustainable environment. Great care was given for the disabled with ramps and blind route markings.
