In 2000, Landscape–Roidis Studio was commissioned by AKTOR S.A. to develop the landscape mitigation and environmental integration strategy for Sections 13.1–13.6 of the Egnatia Odos motorway along the Kavala bypass in Northern Greece.

The project addressed the challenge of integrating a major transportation infrastructure corridor into a sensitive landscape characterized by complex topography, Mediterranean vegetation, and a strong regional identity. The design sought to reduce the visual impact of the motorway while enhancing environmental performance and reinforcing the character of the surrounding landscape.

A comprehensive landscape strategy was developed, focusing on the restoration and stabilization of disturbed landforms, embankments, and cut slopes created during construction. Native and drought-tolerant plant species were selected to ensure long-term resilience, ecological compatibility, and reduced maintenance requirements. Planting interventions were carefully designed to soften infrastructure elements, screen retaining structures and technical works, and facilitate the gradual assimilation of the motorway into its natural setting.

Particular emphasis was placed on erosion control and slope protection through a combination of vegetation establishment and landform rehabilitation techniques. The planting design also aimed to strengthen ecological continuity across the corridor, supporting habitat connectivity and contributing to the long-term environmental sustainability of the project.

By responding to local climatic conditions, terrain characteristics, and existing vegetation patterns, the landscape interventions transformed the motorway from a purely engineering structure into an infrastructure corridor more closely connected to its context. The project demonstrates how landscape architecture can mitigate environmental impacts, enhance visual quality, and establish a more balanced relationship between infrastructure and the natural environment.
