Landscape–Roidis Studio was commissioned by AKTOR S.A. to develop the landscape mitigation strategy for the proposed Comarnic–Brașov Motorway, a major 45-kilometre transportation corridor forming part of the Bucharest–Brașov route in Romania. The commission involved the preparation of a preliminary landscape mitigation master plan as part of a design-and-build tender and financial proposal for one of the country's most significant infrastructure projects.
Traversing a landscape of exceptional natural character, the motorway passes through areas defined by mountainous topography, forested slopes, river valleys, and sensitive ecological systems. The landscape strategy was therefore developed to minimise environmental impacts while ensuring the infrastructure is carefully integrated into its surrounding context.
The proposed mitigation framework combined landform design, ecological restoration, and strategic planting interventions to reduce the visual presence of the motorway and its associated engineering structures. Particular attention was given to cuttings, embankments, retaining walls, bridges, and tunnel approaches, with landscape measures designed to soften transitions between the constructed corridor and the existing terrain.
Native and regionally appropriate plant species formed the basis of the planting strategy, reinforcing local ecological patterns and contributing to biodiversity enhancement. Vegetation was also used to stabilise slopes, restore disturbed areas, provide visual screening, and strengthen landscape continuity along the route.
Beyond environmental mitigation, the master plan addressed the experiential quality of the motorway corridor. Landscape interventions were conceived to enhance the visual journey through the Carpathian landscape, creating a coherent sequence of views while maintaining the identity and character of the region.
The project demonstrates the capacity of landscape architecture to contribute meaningfully to large-scale infrastructure planning. By integrating ecological, visual, and functional considerations within a unified framework, the proposal sought to transform the motorway into an infrastructure landscape that responds sensitively to its environment while supporting long-term environmental resilience and sustainable mobility.
