Landscape mitigation design, Pafos-Polis motorway, Cyprus

PAFOS - POLIS MOTORWAY

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Landscape–Roidis Studio was commissioned by AKTOR S.A. to develop the landscape mitigation strategy for the proposed Pafos–Polis Motorway in Cyprus, a major infrastructure project extending approximately 30 kilometres through a diverse and environmentally sensitive landscape. The commission formed part of a design-and-build tender submission and included the preparation of a preliminary landscape mitigation master plan alongside the project's technical and financial proposal.

The landscape strategy was conceived to minimise the visual and environmental impact of the new motorway while ensuring its sensitive integration into the surrounding terrain. Particular emphasis was placed on the relationship between infrastructure and landscape, recognising the motorway as a permanent intervention within a complex natural and cultural setting.

The proposed mitigation framework combined landform modelling, ecological restoration, and strategic planting to soften engineered elements such as cuttings, embankments, retaining structures, and interchanges. Native and climate-adapted plant species were selected to reinforce local ecological patterns, enhance biodiversity, and support the long-term resilience of the landscape. The planting strategy also aimed to reduce visual intrusion, improve landscape continuity, and facilitate the gradual reintegration of disturbed areas into the surrounding environment.

Beyond environmental considerations, the master plan addressed the visual experience of the motorway corridor itself. Landscape interventions were designed to create a coherent sequence of views and spatial transitions, contributing to a safer and more pleasant journey while reinforcing the unique identity of the Cypriot landscape.

The project demonstrates the important role of landscape architecture in contemporary infrastructure design. By integrating environmental mitigation, ecological restoration, and visual enhancement within a single strategic framework, the proposal sought to transform a large-scale transportation corridor into an infrastructure landscape that responds sensitively to its setting while meeting the functional requirements of a major highway network.
