In 2012, Landscape–Roidis Studio was commissioned by the Municipality of Xanthi to design the public space surrounding the monument dedicated to the late Mayor Amoiridis. Conceived as a place of remembrance within the urban fabric, the project sought to create a dignified landscape that enhances the presence of the memorial while offering a calm and welcoming public environment.
The design adopts a restrained architectural language, allowing the monument to remain the visual and symbolic focal point of the composition. A carefully articulated paving layout establishes a clear spatial hierarchy, subtly directing pedestrian movement and framing views towards the statue without competing with its significance.
A perimeter planting of cypress trees defines the square, introducing a sense of enclosure, permanence, and solemnity traditionally associated with commemorative landscapes. The trees also create a tranquil setting that softens the surrounding urban context while reinforcing the ceremonial character of the space.
Through the careful integration of landscape, materiality, and symbolism, the project transforms a modest urban square into a contemplative civic setting that respectfully commemorates the contribution of a significant public figure while enriching the everyday public realm of Xanthi.
