Landscape–Roidis Studio was commissioned to design an extensive green roof for a secondary school building in Thessaloniki, reimagining the rooftop as a sustainable landscape that enhances both environmental performance and educational value. The intervention contributes to improving the urban microclimate by reducing heat gain, improving air quality, and increasing biodiversity, while simultaneously enhancing the building’s thermal insulation and waterproofing performance.
Inspired by the natural landscapes of northern Greece, the planting design employs a carefully selected palette of native and climate-adapted species arranged in naturalistic compositions that reflect the region’s ecological character. The green roof introduces seasonal variation and ecological resilience while requiring minimal maintenance.
Beyond its environmental benefits, the project serves as a visible demonstration of sustainable design within the educational environment, promoting environmental awareness and strengthening the relationship between architecture, landscape, and nature. The result is a resilient green infrastructure that transforms an underutilized roofscape into an ecological asset for both the building and the wider urban fabric.
