This conceptual masterplan proposes the transformation of a 188.8-hectare former coal mining landscape into a dynamic public destination that combines ecological regeneration, cultural interpretation, and recreational use. The project seeks to reimagine a site shaped by industrial extraction as a resilient landscape capable of supporting new forms of public engagement while preserving the memory of its past.
Central to the proposal is a modular design strategy composed of a series of thematic and functional interventions distributed across the site. Conceived as flexible landscape units, these modules can operate independently or collectively, creating a network of experiences that encourages exploration, discovery, and long-term adaptability. Their placement is carefully calibrated to occupy open areas free of existing vegetation, allowing ecological restoration processes to continue uninterrupted while activating both rehabilitated and untouched portions of the former mining landscape.
The masterplan establishes a framework where environmental recovery and public use are treated as complementary objectives. Educational, cultural, and recreational programs are woven into the landscape, offering visitors multiple ways to engage with the site while revealing its geological, ecological, and industrial narratives.
Rather than erasing the traces of extraction, the proposal embraces them as part of the site's identity. Existing landforms, spatial conditions, and remnants of industrial activity are integrated into the overall design, creating a landscape that acknowledges its history while looking toward a sustainable future.
The result is a flexible and evolving landscape framework that transforms a former industrial territory into a multifunctional public environment—one that fosters learning, recreation, ecological awareness, and a renewed connection between people and place.
