Commissioned in 2009 by the Holy Monastery of Karakalou on Mount Athos, Landscape–Roidis Design Studio developed a comprehensive landscape proposal for the monastery’s surroundings, balancing functional improvements with the preservation of the site’s exceptional spiritual, architectural, and environmental significance.
The design approach was guided by a deep respect for the monastic character of the landscape and the centuries-old relationship between architecture, topography, and nature. Particular attention was given to the needs of both the monastic community and the thousands of pilgrims who visit the monastery, ensuring that contemporary requirements could be accommodated without compromising the authenticity of the setting.
A fundamental principle of the project was the preservation of the existing spatial structure. Historic roads, footpaths, stone retaining walls, traditional cobbled surfaces, and mature vegetation were retained and integrated into the overall design strategy. Interventions were intentionally restrained, reinforcing the continuity of the landscape while enhancing functionality and accessibility.
Targeted improvements included the widening of the main entrance to accommodate contemporary circulation needs and the creation of a discreet parking area for visitor transportation. Two pavilions were introduced to provide sheltered resting places for pilgrims—one located near the arrival area and a second positioned close to the monastery’s cemeteries, offering spaces for contemplation and reflection.
The proposal also included the ecological and aesthetic enhancement of the stream adjacent to the entrance, transforming it into a more legible and integrated landscape feature while preserving its natural character.
Rather than imposing a new landscape language, the project sought to reveal and strengthen the qualities already embedded within the site. The result is a sensitive intervention that enhances the visitor experience while safeguarding the cultural, spiritual, and environmental identity of one of Mount Athos’ most significant monastic landscapes.
