Landscape–Roidis Studio was commissioned to design an extensive green roof for the IKA building in the Toumba district of Thessaloniki, transforming an underutilized rooftop into a sustainable landscape that enhances both environmental performance and urban quality. Conceived as an ecological extension of the surrounding landscape, the design contributes to improving the local microclimate by reducing heat gain, enhancing thermal insulation, and strengthening the building’s waterproofing performance.
The planting strategy draws inspiration from the native vegetation and landscape character of northern Greece, employing resilient species well adapted to the region’s climatic conditions. Carefully composed planting patterns create a dynamic yet naturalistic landscape that changes throughout the seasons while requiring minimal maintenance.
By integrating ecological principles with architectural performance, the project demonstrates how green roofs can mitigate the environmental impact of dense urban development, improve biodiversity, and contribute to a healthier, more sustainable city.
