Gennadios Park

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

For Genadios Park in Thessaloniki, Landscape–Roidis Studio was commissioned in 1998 by the former Municipality of Triandria to regenerate a neglected public space centred around an abandoned open-air amphitheatre and its surrounding landscape. The project sought to transform an underutilised urban area into an attractive and accessible public destination that would encourage social interaction and everyday use.

The design strategy reinterpreted the former amphitheatre as a sculpted water landscape, introducing a cascading sequence of water features that flow into a freeform pond. This intervention became the defining element of the park, bringing movement, sound, and a dynamic visual presence to the site while establishing a strong identity within the surrounding urban fabric.

Complementing the water features, a network of natural flagstone pathways was introduced to improve accessibility and circulation throughout the park. Extensive planting of trees, shrubs, and groundcovers enhanced the site’s environmental performance, strengthened its spatial character, and contributed to the creation of a more comfortable microclimate for visitors. The carefully composed planting scheme also softened the surrounding urban context, creating a sense of enclosure and refuge within the city.

Through the integration of water, planting, and pedestrian infrastructure, the intervention transformed a forgotten public space into a vibrant urban oasis. More than two decades later, Genadios Park continues to serve as a valued community landscape, offering opportunities for relaxation, recreation, and social gathering while demonstrating the enduring role of landscape architecture in the revitalisation of urban environments.
