Commissioned by Gerakas S.A., Landscape–Roidis Studio developed the complete landscape design for Gerakas Villas, a residential complex located in Porto Heli, Greece. The project comprises ten independent villas situated on a dramatic 10-acre hillside site, where slopes reach gradients of up to 45%, offering panoramic views towards the surrounding landscape and the sea.
The residences are organised into two distinct clusters distributed across two levels with an elevation difference of approximately seven metres. The landscape strategy was guided by a commitment to preserving the site's natural topography and minimising unnecessary interventions. Rather than imposing extensive earthworks, the design works with the terrain, integrating the architecture into the hillside through a carefully calibrated system of retaining walls that respond to the site's steep gradients.
These retaining structures serve both functional and spatial purposes, accommodating parking areas, private swimming pools, circulation routes, and individual gardens while helping to establish a coherent relationship between the built environment and the natural landscape. The resulting composition allows each residence to maintain privacy, uninterrupted views, and a strong connection to the surrounding terrain.
The planting design draws inspiration from the character of the local ecosystem, creating a landscape that integrates seamlessly with the existing pine-covered hillsides. A palette of resilient, drought-tolerant species was selected to ensure long-term sustainability and adaptability to the site's demanding environmental conditions. Particular emphasis was placed on species that flourish during the summer months, reinforcing the seasonal identity of the Mediterranean landscape while responding to the climatic conditions of the Peloponnese.
Through a sensitive balance of topographical integration, ecological planting, and carefully articulated outdoor spaces, the project transforms a challenging hillside into a cohesive residential landscape. The intervention demonstrates how landscape architecture can enhance the relationship between architecture and terrain, allowing the development to emerge as a natural extension of its environment rather than an imposition upon it.
