Residence in Plagiari, Thessaloniki

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Completed in 1985, this private residential landscape in Plagiari, near Thessaloniki, represents one of the earliest projects undertaken by Landscape–Roidis Studio. Commissioned by a private client, the project involved the comprehensive design of both hardscape and planting for a 1,000-square-metre property surrounding a family residence, establishing many of the principles that would later define the studio’s landscape approach.

The design sought to create a seamless relationship between architecture and garden, transforming the outdoor areas into an extension of the home and supporting year-round use. Rather than treating the landscape as a decorative setting, the proposal conceived it as a series of interconnected outdoor living spaces designed to enhance everyday life through comfort, functionality, and a strong connection to nature.

A carefully articulated network of pathways and terraces was constructed using locally sourced natural flagstones, creating a durable material palette deeply rooted in the character of the region. Generous timber pergolas were strategically positioned throughout the garden, providing shaded outdoor rooms that encourage gathering, relaxation, and outdoor living during the warm Mediterranean summer months.

The planting design was guided by a commitment to environmental compatibility and long-term resilience. Native species and plants well adapted to the local climate were selected to create a landscape that responds naturally to seasonal conditions while requiring limited maintenance. The resulting composition balances structure and informality, combining shade, texture, and seasonal variation within a cohesive garden environment.

A carefully integrated lighting scheme extends the use of the outdoor spaces into the evening, highlighting architectural features, circulation routes, and key landscape elements. Through subtle illumination, the garden acquires a distinct nighttime identity while enhancing safety and atmosphere.
Although modest in scale, the project reflects a thoughtful and holistic design philosophy in which architecture, landscape, and daily life are closely intertwined, creating a timeless residential environment rooted in its Mediterranean setting.
