Panhellenic Architectural Competition of Asklipeios street in Trikala

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

In 2005, Landscape–Roidis Studio was awarded Second Prize in a national architectural competition for the redevelopment of Asklipiou Street, the principal pedestrian and commercial axis of Trikala. The proposal encompassed both the pedestrian corridor and the adjacent public square connecting the urban center to the banks of the Litheos River, one of the city’s most significant natural assets.

The project addressed the coexistence of intense commercial activity and pedestrian movement along a street largely occupied by cafés and outdoor seating. Rather than allowing these uses to spread along building frontages, the design introduced a clear spatial framework that relocated seating areas to the center of the pedestrian zone. This strategy liberated the façades, creating uninterrupted circulation routes along both sides of the street and improving accessibility, orientation, and visual continuity.

A series of lightweight pergola structures defined and shaded the central social spaces, while differentiated paving patterns organized movement and reinforced the hierarchy of the public realm. Small urban plazas were introduced at key intersections, marking important cross streets and creating moments of pause and gathering along the route. Water features further enriched the pedestrian experience, contributing visual interest, microclimatic comfort, and a distinctive identity.

The proposal sought to transform Asklipiou Street into a vibrant yet highly legible public environment where commerce, social activity, and pedestrian circulation coexist within a coherent urban framework. By redefining the relationship between movement and occupation, the design enhanced the quality, functionality, and spatial character of one of Trikala’s most important public spaces.
