Mera Park, Grevena

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Landscape–Roidis Studio was commissioned by the Municipality of Grevena to redesign Merá Park, the city’s largest public green space and a key recreational destination located at the entrance of the urban center. Covering approximately 17,000 m², the project aims to transform the existing park into a contemporary landscape that combines recreation, culture, education, and environmental awareness within a cohesive natural setting.

Central to the proposal is the enhancement of the park’s existing lake, which is preserved in its original form and reinforced as the focal point of the landscape. Positioned along its shoreline, a new refreshment pavilion activates the waterfront while creating a destination for everyday social interaction and leisure.

The design introduces a network of pedestrian routes, seating areas, and gathering spaces that improve accessibility and encourage year-round use. A botanical garden enriches the educational character of the park, while a large playground and outdoor fitness facilities accommodate users of all ages. An open-air theatre provides a venue for cultural events and community activities, further strengthening the park’s role as a civic destination. A central plaza, conceived as a contemporary “clearing” within the landscape, offers a flexible space for informal gatherings and public events.

Respecting the existing topography, the proposal minimizes earthworks and preserves the natural character of the site. Environmentally conscious materials—including natural stone, timber, and permeable surfaces—define the public spaces and circulation network. Shaded pergolas surrounding the pavilion extend usable outdoor areas and create a distinctive relationship between architecture, landscape, and water.

The planting strategy introduces carefully selected trees and shrubs adapted to the climatic and ecological conditions of Grevena, enhancing biodiversity while preserving the identity of the existing landscape. The result is a vibrant urban park that promotes wellbeing, environmental quality, and community life through a sensitive integration of nature and public space.
