Commissioned by the Municipality of Amorgos, Landscape–Roidis Studio developed a comprehensive redesign proposal for the 5,000 m² waterfront square of Aegiali, one of the island’s most important public spaces. Stretching from the village ferry pier to the beginning of the sandy beach, the project sought to transform a vehicle-dominated coastal zone into a vibrant pedestrian waterfront that celebrates the unique character of the Aegean landscape.
At the time of the study, much of the seafront was occupied by parked vehicles and fragmented uses, limiting public access to the shoreline and diminishing the quality of the urban environment. The proposal reimagined the waterfront as a continuous public realm where movement, recreation, and social life could unfold in direct dialogue with the sea.
The design strategy prioritized pedestrianization, creating generous waterfront promenades and a sequence of interconnected public spaces that encourage walking, gathering, and everyday interaction. Small plazas, shaded seating areas, and pergola structures were carefully integrated throughout the square, providing opportunities for rest, social activity, and outdoor dining while reinforcing the identity of the coastal settlement.
Vehicular circulation was reorganized through a controlled roadway designed to coexist harmoniously with pedestrian movement, while parking was removed from the central waterfront. Particular attention was given to improving access to the beach, strengthening connections between the village and the shoreline, and accommodating the seasonal rhythms of tourism and local life.
The landscape design incorporated planting adapted to the island’s coastal conditions, including shade trees, Mediterranean shrubs, and seasonal vegetation that enhance comfort and spatial character. Materials, paving patterns, and public infrastructure were selected to reflect the architectural language of the Cyclades while ensuring durability and accessibility.
The result is a contemporary waterfront landscape that balances mobility, recreation, and environmental quality, establishing Aegiali’s seafront as a welcoming civic destination and a vibrant extension of the island’s public life.
