17 Parks, Katerini

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Katerini, a city of approximately 90,000 inhabitants in Northern Greece, is situated within a predominantly agricultural landscape. Despite its compact urban structure, the city has historically lacked a cohesive network of high-quality public open spaces capable of supporting everyday social life and environmental resilience.

Landscape–Roidis Studio was commissioned by Pieriki S.A., the municipality’s development company, to design a system of seventeen new public squares and neighborhood parks distributed across both the historic center and emerging urban districts. The project sought to establish a new framework of accessible, attractive, and environmentally responsive public spaces, strengthening the relationship between residents and the urban landscape.

Developed according to bioclimatic design principles, the proposal integrates extensive planting, shaded gathering areas, children's play spaces, water elements, contemporary urban furniture, and pedestrian-friendly circulation networks. Cool paving materials, sustainable planting strategies, and energy-efficient lighting contribute to improved microclimatic conditions and enhanced user comfort throughout the year.

Rather than applying a uniform design language, each square was conceived with its own spatial identity, responding to the character and needs of its surrounding neighborhood while contributing to a coherent city-wide public space network. The result is a collection of distinctive urban destinations that function as local landmarks, encouraging social interaction, recreation, and community life.

By combining environmental performance with a strong sense of place, the project redefines the role of public space in Katerini, creating a greener, more livable, and socially vibrant urban environment.
