Fraport Greece commissioned the multidisciplinary team of AVW Architecture, Landscape–Roidis Studio, and Karanasios–Balsami to design the outdoor environment of Mytilene International Airport. As a key gateway to the island of Lesvos, the project sought to transform the airport’s external spaces into a landscape that reflects the character of the region while offering a welcoming and memorable experience for passengers and visitors.

The landscape strategy was guided by four core principles: identity, safety, sustainability, and user experience. Drawing inspiration from the natural landscapes and cultural heritage of the Aegean, the design establishes a strong sense of place that complements the airport’s expanded terminal facilities. Planting compositions, material selections, and spatial organization were carefully developed to create an environment that is distinctly connected to the island.

Given the operational requirements of an international airport, safety and security were integral to the design process. Planting schemes were selected to avoid attracting bird populations, while maintaining unobstructed sightlines, passive surveillance, and full compliance with aviation regulations.

Sustainability was addressed through the extensive use of native and climate-adapted species capable of thriving under local environmental conditions with minimal maintenance requirements. Drought-tolerant groundcovers and resilient Mediterranean planting communities contribute to the long-term ecological performance of the landscape.
