Pefka, formerly known as Retziki, is a vibrant suburban municipality of Thessaloniki whose town center serves as a key commercial and social destination for the wider residential area. Landscape–Roidis Studio was commissioned to redesign the pedestrian infrastructure and public realm along Papanicolaou Avenue, the municipality’s principal commercial corridor, with the aim of enhancing walkability, supporting local businesses, and improving the quality of the urban environment.

The project was conceived as a comprehensive streetscape intervention that rebalances the relationship between pedestrians, vehicles, and public transport. Particular emphasis was placed on improving accessibility, organizing roadside parking, increasing greenery, and creating a more comfortable and attractive public realm for residents and visitors alike.

A unified paving language forms the backbone of the design, visually connecting the various segments of the avenue and ensuring seamless transitions between commercial frontages, public spaces, and circulation routes. Wider pedestrian pathways, redesigned bus stops, and carefully organized parking areas improve functionality and contribute to a clearer spatial hierarchy along the street.

Planting and landscape elements play a central role in enhancing the character of the avenue. New trees and planting areas introduce shade, soften the urban environment, and improve microclimatic conditions, while contemporary lighting infrastructure reinforces safety and establishes a distinctive nighttime identity for the town center.

The result is a coherent and pedestrian-oriented urban corridor that strengthens commercial activity, encourages social interaction, and elevates the everyday experience of public space. Through the integration of landscape, mobility, and urban design, the project contributes to a more vibrant, accessible, and resilient center for the municipality of Pefka.
