Thessaloniki Metro

Thessaloniki Metro

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Landscape Roidis was commissioned by the AKTOR–VINCI consortium to design the landscape strategy for the five stations of the Thessaloniki Metro extension to Kalamaria: Nea Krini, Nomarxia, Aretsou, Kalamaria, and Mikra. The project sought to reintegrate extensive infrastructure works into the urban fabric through a resilient and context-sensitive planting approach.

The landscape design prioritised the creation of sustainable, visually cohesive, and environmentally responsive public spaces. Planting compositions were developed through a balanced selection of deciduous and evergreen trees and shrubs, ensuring seasonal variation, year-round structure, and a diverse palette of foliage colours and flowering periods. Native and climate-adapted species were selected to respond to the local microclimate while accommodating the specific technical conditions of the station rooftops and surrounding public spaces.

Particular emphasis was placed on the use of robust plant species resistant to pests, diseases, and atmospheric pollution, ensuring long-term performance and reduced maintenance requirements. The proposal also contributes to the ecological restoration of areas affected by construction activities, enhancing biodiversity and reinforcing the environmental quality of the urban landscape.

Beyond its ecological role, the landscape intervention improves the functionality and experience of public space. New planting areas define pedestrian routes, frame gathering and resting zones, and contribute to a more comfortable urban environment through the creation of shaded areas and improved microclimatic conditions. By combining environmental resilience, resource efficiency, and spatial quality, the project establishes a durable landscape framework that supports the long-term integration of the metro extension within the city of Thessaloniki.
