Located on the island of Evia, the seaside promenade of Edipsos constitutes one of the town’s most significant public spaces, linking its renowned thermal heritage with the coastal landscape of the North Euboean Gulf. Known since antiquity for its therapeutic springs, Edipsos has long attracted visitors seeking both wellness and leisure.

Landscape–Roidis Studio was commissioned to develop the landscape masterplan for the town’s 4.5-kilometre waterfront, reimagining the seafront as a continuous public realm that accommodates tourism, recreation, and everyday urban life. Central to the proposal was the pedestrianisation of the entire waterfront, creating an uninterrupted promenade that strengthens the relationship between the city, its thermal identity, and the sea.

The design draws inspiration from the distinctive chromatic qualities of the mineral deposits formed by the thermal springs. Carefully selected local paving materials translate these natural tones into the public realm, reinforcing a strong sense of place and visual continuity along the waterfront.

A sequence of complementary public spaces and amenities was introduced to enrich the visitor experience. These include generous pedestrian promenades, integrated café and restaurant terraces, shaded seating areas beneath pergola structures, water features referencing the town’s spa culture, and a small open-air amphitheatre designed to accommodate seasonal cultural events. A continuous timber deck extends along the shoreline, creating additional spaces for swimming, relaxation, and direct engagement with the sea.

The masterplan transforms the Edipsos waterfront into a vibrant linear landscape that integrates leisure, culture, and tourism within a cohesive spatial framework. Through the enhancement of pedestrian connectivity, the introduction of shaded public spaces, and the celebration of the town’s thermal heritage, the project strengthens Edipsos’ identity as one of Greece’s most distinctive spa and seaside destinations.
