PIRAEUS is the main port of Greece. Kleisovis and Karpathou are two roads meet each other in Karpathou sq. They connect two main seaside roads of the Piraeus. The area where the roads are located, is over populated and there is a lack of greenery, easy accessible pedestrian routes, ramps for the disabled, routes for the blind and organized parking plots. Landscape -Roidis was commissioned by Pireas Plus SA to redesign both the road’s aside pedestrian routes, in order to give enough walking room to pedestrians and the disabled, to increase the greenery, to use cold paving materials for bioclimatic purposes and take care of the random parking of private cars. Landscape-Roidis’s landscape design, following bioclimatic criteria from the master plan up to detailed design, give more room to pedestrian ways, bicycle routs, organize better the parking lots, pave parking lots and pedestrian ways with cold materials, reorganize the bus stop, place the underground garbage -cans in appropriate areas, increase the greenery and the lighting and finally creates an impressive road, friendly to pedestrians

Bioclimatic design of Klisovis-Karpathou road

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

Located within the dense urban fabric of Piraeus, Kleisovis and Karpathou Streets form a vital 1.3-kilometer corridor linking two of the city’s principal coastal avenues. Despite their strategic importance, the surrounding neighborhood was characterized by limited greenery, fragmented pedestrian infrastructure, insufficient accessibility provisions, and unorganized on-street parking, resulting in a public realm that prioritized vehicular movement over pedestrian experience.

Commissioned by Piraeus Plus S.A., Landscape–Roidis Studio developed a comprehensive streetscape regeneration strategy for the entire corridor, transforming it into a more accessible, sustainable, and environmentally responsive urban environment.

The proposal was guided by functional, aesthetic, and bioclimatic principles, with the objective of reclaiming public space for pedestrians while improving overall urban performance. Sidewalks were widened and redesigned to ensure comfortable circulation for all users, including people with disabilities and visually impaired pedestrians. Dedicated bicycle routes were introduced, encouraging alternative modes of mobility and strengthening connections between neighborhoods and the waterfront.

A reorganization of the traffic network, including the introduction of a one-way vehicular system, allowed for the creation of clearly defined parking areas and a more efficient use of public space. Cool and permeable paving materials were employed throughout pedestrian and parking zones to mitigate heat accumulation, improve stormwater management, and enhance microclimatic conditions.

Additional interventions included the redesign of bus stops, the integration of underground waste collection systems, an expanded planting strategy with new trees and landscape areas, and a comprehensive lighting scheme that improves safety and reinforces the identity of the corridor after dark.

The project redefines Kleisovis and Karpathou Streets as a contemporary urban boulevard where mobility, accessibility, and environmental performance are seamlessly integrated. Through the application of bioclimatic design principles and public realm improvements, the intervention creates a greener, more pedestrian-oriented streetscape that enhances everyday life in the heart of Piraeus.
